When Hormones Cause Skin Tags
While being pregnant, a woman experiences a great deal of hormone changes. There are 2 hormones in particular that increase during pregnancy and have been associated with skin tags. The first pregnancy hormone, which increases during the 2nd trimester, is leptin. A study (resource) published in 2013, involved 30 people, 20 with skin tags. The researchers concluded the hormone leptin may be implicated in the development of skin tags. Another study (resource) compared a group of people with 3 or more skin tags to a group without skin tags. The results showed an association between serum levels and the presence of skin tags. The next study (resource) was published by Cairo University, Department of Dermatology. The researchers took 45 biopsies from a group of 15 people with skin tags. The results showed a higher level of leptin in the skin tags compared to the normal skin of the patient.
The second pregnancy hormone is estrogen. Estrogen levels increase at a steady rate during pregnancy and peak in the 3rd trimester. A study (resource) published in 2010 compared 2 groups, one with skin tags and the other without. The researchers found the level of estrogen receptors was significantly higher in skin tags than in the people without skin tags. In a 2nd study (resource) biopsies were taken from skin tags of 25 people. They concluded skin tags correlated positively with estrogen receptors which may implicated role for them in the development of skin tags.
Hormones are chemicals produced in the endocrine system by glands. A hormone imbalance occurs when there is too much or too little of a hormone. A healthy body relies on a proper balance of hormones. When they are out of whack, it can wreak havoc with everything going on in your body. Hormonal imbalances from leptin and estrogen can occur at times that doesn’t involve pregnancy. When that happens, as noted in the studies above, it can lead to skin tags.
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (POS) is a hormonal disorder that can occur when levels of certain hormones are unusually high. In addition to a list of health problems, skin tags are a symptom of POS (resource). In a study published in 2015, 40 patients with POS were examined. In addition to a long list of skin problems, 10% of the patients had skin tags (resource).

How To Prevent Skin Tags From Hormones
The following are certain things you can do that will help lessen your chance of getting skin tags.
Diet: By following a healthy diet can help prevent skin tags in a few ways. First, by avoiding added sugars and excess carbohydrates. One proven cause of skin tags is insulin resistance. By eating a low-carb diet and avoiding added sugar can keep your insulin levels low. Another way a healthy diet can help you is by keeping your body fat levels low. Skin folds caused by extra fat can cause skin friction which may lead to skin tags. In addition, weight gain causes your clothes to get tighter. This will create a repeated rubbing on your skin by the tight clothing.
Prevent dry skin: Dry skin is a big side effect of hormonal changes. Dry skin can cause more skin rubbing and irritation than moisturized skin. Moisturize every day, drink plenty of water, avoid long hot showers and dry air.
Avoid skin wetness: Areas like your armpits can get sweaty which can irritate the skin and cause extra rubbing. Use baby powder under your arms, thighs and anywhere you may have skin folds.
